Play Like a Champion Today

Play Like a Champion Today!
Play Like a Champion Today works with coaches and sport leaders to shape a positive sports culture for all young people. The curricula is based on the latest research in youth and adolescent development with a belief that sports should be fair, inclusive character-building, fitness-focused, safe, and fun.   All Play Like a Champion Today coach clinics are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Coaching Education (NCACE).
The Archdiocese of Denver Catholic Schools Athletic League has adopted the Play Like a Champion Today (PLACT) “Sports as a Ministry” program from the University of Notre Dame.  The “Sports as a Ministry” initiative of the Play Like a Champion Today Educational Series is a research-based, child-centered curriculum designed to
· Help us recognize the spiritual nature of sports
· Train youth sport coaches to be effective ministers
· Promote the moral and character development of our youth
For incoming 5th grade parents or new middle school parents - one parent must attend a PLACT workshop in order for your athlete to participate in a Catholic Schools Athletic League sporting event.  Several parent  workshops are scheduled in preparation for fall sports.  Due to limited space, pre-registration is required whether you register to attend a training session at St. John’s or elsewhere in the archdiocese.
According to CSAL regulations, your attendance requirement for the PLACT workshop must be met before the first game of the season or your child will be unable to play until this requirement is satisfied.
If you are a family that has not attended a PLACT parent workshop and your child will be participating in CSAL for the first time, please refer to the CSAL website at

3rd and 4th grade parents are encouraged to sign up early, but it isn't a requirement.   If you have coached and taken the coach’s class, the parents class is not required.
Coaching at SJB
We rely entirely on volunteers to serve as coaches and assistant coaches for our teams.  We know that your time is dear and we have found that sometimes having teams with a head coach and one or two assistant coaches is the best way to accommodate time constraints.  If you are interested in coaching or are a returning coach and are excited to come back for another season, please contact Randy Dufour at

All coaches must complete a background check, attend the Play Like a Champion training, Safe Environment  training, and take an online concussion training.

Registration for the Winter PLCT Coaches Workshops are available on the CSAL website Dates, times, and locations for each class can be found on the CSAL calendar as well as within the actual registration.

All coaches of any CSAL affiliated teams in grades 5-8 are required to have taken this class. This is a one-time requirement! PLEASE DO NOT WAIT. Per CSAL Rules and Policies, individuals that do not meet this requirement will not be allowed to coach or be placed on a team roster.
